General Information about the town

1.  We are primarily a residential community, with limited commercial and business development.  At the present time, our population is 9300.

2.  There are buses that run on a regular basis to New York City.

3.  There are several religious institutions in the community, including a Catholic Church, Baptist Church, Reformed Jewish Congregation and a Bible church.  There are no busses running in the community to these locations, however they are mostly centrally located.  

4.  The Township of Washington has a consolidated school system with our neighboring town, Westwood - with elementary schools in both towns and the Jr./Sr. High School located in the Township.  More information on the schools may be obtained by writing to the Westwood Regional Board of Education, 701 Ridgewood Road, Township of Washington, N.J. 07676 (Tel: 201 664-0880).  There is also a Catholic Girls' High School, Immaculate Heart Academy in the Township - this is one of the five outstanding Parochial High Schools in Bergen County. 

5.  We have parks in town and recreating programs, including baseball and softball for children and adults in the spring through early summer.  Any other questions on recreation may be directed to the Recreation Department - 666-3312.

6.  We have a convenient shopping center in the community, which includes a supermarket and many other small stores which serve the basic needs of residents.  In many cases you can walk to this area, however, from outlying parts of the Township a car is far more convenient.  

7.  Although we do not have an available map of bus routes, they can be obtained from the Bergen County Board of Transportation, Court Plaza South - Room 207, 21 Main Street, Hackensack, N.J. 07601 (201 488-0840).

8.  The residents of the Township are provided with a newsletter that comes out about six times a year - "The Citizen".
