The Fire Prevention Bureau inspects buildings for fire hazards, reviews building plans for compliance with fire prevention ordinances and codes, and educates the public about Fire Prevention. Director Tom Sears completed a 12 week course at the Bergen Police and Fire Academy in order to be up to date on the state requirements. He is to be commended for his hard work and dedication in making sure that all is state compliant.
The new chief of the bureau is Jim Strabone; who has extensive experience in this area. The inspectors for the bureau are Joe Caporale, Paul Langone, and Jimmy Stewart.
Carbon Monoxide, Smoke & Fire Extinguisher Inspection
Upon sale of your home an inspection to ensure that your home is compliant with New Jersey State Fire Codes with respect to the above, inspections must be performed prior to closing.

You must have the following in place in order to avoid a re-inspection and extra fee;

You will need a 2 A: 10 BC fire extinguisher mounted in the kitchen on the wall. This extinguisher must be within 10 feet of your kitchen BUT NOT on the other side of any type of a door.

You will need a minimum of 1 smoke detector on each level of the home.

You will need 1 carbon monoxide detector within 10 feet of any bedroom. It may be plug in or battery operated
Fees for Inspection are as follows:

More than 10 days before closing will be $ 40.00

Less than or 10 days before closing will be $ 50.00

If re-inspection is required an additional fee of $ 70.00 will be add to the basic fee
